Newsletter - May 2008

FROM THE CAPTAIN

Many of you have seen major changes at the course. They are constantly working to improve the links and are now working on #10 with major changes. It will be great to see what it looks like when they are finished. Hole #13 has reopened and is beautiful.

The coots have migrated south for the summer and the majority of them are gone. It is TOO nice to be rid of them. However, now we have the baby geese arriving on the scene. Because of the continuance of the bird feces, Winter Rules are still in effect.

Our General Meeting will be at 1:00 instead of 1:30 because of the Shotgun Start. This is also the 25th Anniversary for Shoreline Women’s Golf Club.

Our 3rd General Meeting is coming up this coming Tuesday, June 3rd. Remember that you are required to attend 2 meetings a year. If you have not attended a General Meeting, you only have the June and September meetings left for the year so be sure to attend.
If you do not know how many meetings you have attended and games played, you can contact Cathy Priest to find out by email – cathypriest@earthlink.net or call at 650-851-3240. A list will be at the General Meeting.

Members who have not attended any meetings this year are:

Mona Armistead, Virginia Dennehy, Jill Florant, Ethel Green, Janice Hew, Dian Jakubowski, Mims Munro, Ann Oliver, Soo Pak, Georgianna Yang, Audrey Hardy, Cindy Hyeong, Wariya Murphy

If you are not on this list, you have attended 2 or 1 General Meeting’s.

PWGA – Messages

Tuesday, June 3rd is the Susan B Koman Rally for the Cure Tournament. This will be a Shotgun Start at 8:00. Requirements are that you will need to take a cart and also pay in advance. The fee is $41 for golf. Please respond by May 27th.

Make your check payable to SWGC and mail it to:

Nancy Humpal
22276 Starling Drive
Los Altos, CA 94024

The donation of $20 is for the Rally for the Cure. The sign up sheet for this is at the course. Make sure that you pay attention to the back of the sign up sheet. You can select a magazine that is different for Golf for Women and the choices are on the back of the sign up sheet. If you do not have the opportunity to sign up at the course, you can also contact Nancy Humpal by email – nhumpal@sbcglobal.net or call her at 408-735-8116.

Be sure to check your PWGA book for upcoming tournaments. Spring Partners Tournament opens May 23rd and closes on June 6th. The Mixed Couples Tournament opens for entries on May 30th and closes June 13th. You can get the entry form from the back of your PWGA book and the cost of the tournament by looking at the Orange PWGA book that is at the course, or you can contact Nancy Humpal.

SPECIAL EVENTS

MATCH PLAY
The winners of Match Play will be announced at the General Meeting.

SPRING SHOOT
Love those Margarita’s from Connie Ring who ran this tournament. A good time was had by all. Winners will be announced at the General Meeting.

STARTER/SCORER DUTIES
So far this year we have had only one person who has not shown to do her duty and things have been going well. Maybe the $25 fine was an incentive to make sure that either you did your duty or get a substitute. Thanks for your efforts.

RULES
If you have any Rules questions, don’t hesitate to email Sue Kaupp and get her to help. The new 2008 Rules of Golf are on sale in the Pro Shop. If you don’t have one it is wise to get one and keep it in your bag for questions as to a rule when you are on the course.

CAPTAIN TROPHY WINNERS
March – Betsy Frederick – Net 64
April – Cheryl Shepard – Net 68
May – Bonnie Gardiner – Net 64

NEW MEMBERS
Wariya Murphy

Welcome to Janice Hew who played her qualifying round. Her address and information is in the Roster Book. However, the town is Mountain View and not Atherton.

HANDICAP
Please make sure to post after your round of golf wherever you play. Namie has noticed that some members are not posting after the Tuesday play. If you have failed to post, email Namie and let her know. Do not post at home after playing at the course, otherwise you will be posted twice for that day.

MEMBERSHIP
Terri Griffith, Membership Director, is putting together a sheet to post at different courses to try to get new members. If you have anyone that is interested in the Club please don’t hesitate to call her for any information that she has to give to you.

OTHER NEWS
The Treasurer expressed concern at our last General Meeting regarding not having enough revenue to cover the budget. This is due to a decrease in our membership. A committee of the Board members had a meeting to review the budget and how to make changes to it. Decisions were recommended to decrease items in the budget. Those changes that were recommended were the following.

Because of the tournament charging $5 to play and also sweeps come from the day of play:
Delete – Spring/Holiday shoots @ $40 each

Because of the $5 sweeps for each week being paid:
Delete – Match Play @ $100

Trophy Day – Previous winners get a check from the Treasurer for $15. Delete check from the Treasurer and award a $15 gift certificate from that day’s sweep money.

Increase the dues for 2009 by $5. This will make the dues $60 per year. Club dues $34 and PWGA dues $26. Other Clubs have dues that are more than ours. Examples are: Santa Teresa $70, West Valley - $68, Palo Alto - $70.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE
It is the time to have a Nominating Committee for new officers. This is done in June to give them time to get volunteers for the upcoming year. It requires 2 Board Members and 3 members. Please be prepared to volunteer for this committee. It is a very important position for getting new officers.

I look forward to seeing you at the General Meeting and at the course.
Captain, Mary Lu Bishop
