History of the Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Association

ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION

The Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Association was started in 1942 in the midst of World War II. At that time there were very little opportunities for women to belong to an organized group of women golfers during that time in history, let alone in the Santa Clara Valley where agriculture was the main focus and recreation took a back seat to hard labor.

As the war came to an end and industry started to move into the Valley, the Santa Clara Women’s Golf Association provided an organization to promote competition amongst women golfers from the public and private golf clubs in the Santa Clara Valley. Many dedicated women over the past 6 decades have worked hard to keep the association going to be one of the oldest women’s golfing associations in California. The current association is organized by an annual board of 12 progressive women who continue to keep tradition and new ideas alive for future women golfers in the Santa Clara Valley.

The President’s Tournament is the kick-off golfing event of the year for the Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Association. This is a tournament run by the current President, honoring past presidents who have put time and effort into making the Association what it is today. Each member county club is invited to have their Captain and Team Play Captain join the field each with a guest in a friendly best ball competition. The camaraderie and fun start the ball rolling for the events scheduled for the rest of the year.

One of the features of the SCCWGA is an annual match play, 3-month competition that pits teams of 8 golfers from each of the participating county clubs at neutral county golf courses. After playing each of the rival clubs in head to head match play competition, a net point and gross point champion will be determined by total score over all the matches. This is a fun, yet competitive tournament rivaling the likes of the Ryder and Walker Cups when it comes down to the pride of representing your club.

The Premiere event of the year is the Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Association Championship. This 36 hole Medal Play, competition has been crowning champions for over 63 years! The Championship is open to all women golfers who participate in Santa Clara County Woman’s Golf Clubs as well as all women golfers residing in the County who hold a valid USGA index. Throughout the years the venue for the Santa Clara County Championship has taken place at a variety of county public and private courses. The past few years the San Jose Country Club has been hosting this celebrated event. The contest is steeped in stiff competition in the Championship flight with the top golfers battling over the prestigious title of being the best woman golfer in the county. All the competition is flighted, and awards go to the top golfer in each flight along with awarding a perpetual silver loving cup to the low net winner over the entire field. There are numerous stories to tell about past competitions, and the media has reported on this event for many years with article ranging from low handicap nuns, teenage competitors, returning champions, to participants who have gone on to become teaching and touring pros.

The Santa Clara Women’s Golf Association takes pride in knowing they have supported thousands of women golfers and the important role it has played in golf history. They intend to continue to provide an organization that looks to the future, and understands the value it brings to women golfers in the Santa Clara Valley and to the sport of golf.
